Renata Carvalho

Is an actress, director, playwright, and transpologist

Graduated in Social Sciences. Founder of Monart (National Movement of Trans Artists), and of the "Trans Representativity Manifesto" (which aims at the inclusion of travesti/trans bodies in the spaces of art creation and calls for a break from the practice of Trans Fake - cisgender artists who play trans/travesti characters).

As a transpologist (a trans anthropologist), she has studied the travesti/trans body since 2007, when she became a volunteer prevention agent for STIs, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and hepatitis by the municipal health secretary of Santos, working specifically with travestis and transsexuals in prostitution, the same year of her travesti perception.

This transpology points to the social, mediatic, criminal, hyper sexualizing, pathological, religious and moral construction that permeates trans/travesti bodies, where art, and consequently, artists were/are also responsible for the construction of this common sense imagery.

The artist places her travesti body as subject and object of research, debating/denouncing the absence of these bodies in art spaces.

Transpophagic Manifesto

“I decided today to dress myself with my own skin. My travesti body”. Renata “dresses herself” with her own body to narrate the historicity of her corporeality. Renata feeds on her “transcestrality”. Eats it, digests it. A transpophagy. The travesti body as an experiment, a laboratory guinea pig. A Travesti Body’s manifest. The sign twinkles TRAVESTI. TRAVESTI. TRAVESTI

Antigone Travesti

ANTIGONE TRAVESTI is based on Sophocles’ Greek tragedy.

Polynices, a 23-year-old travesti and Antigone’s daughter, is brutally murdered in the centre of Thebes, a megalopolis that has just suffered a coup d’état led by Creon. Whilst attempting to give her daughter a proper burial, Antigone is informed of Creon’s decree: Polynices is forbidden from being buried in women’s clothing or having her name on the gravestone. Refusing to accept this, Antigone calls a meeting of all the trans women and travestis of Thebes, with the aim of overthrowing the tyrant and giving her daughter the honour she deserves.
